Reading: Psalm 55:22 (NRSVUE)
Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.
I love to fish. Many good memories come to mind of my dad patiently getting my line all set up and baiting the hook so my hope of pulling in a fish could come true. Many summers, Marty and I would go trout fishing in Montana in the Stillwater River. I learned to cast and to get my own line set up, which always included adding a small weight.
Reading Psalm 55:22 brings this image to mind—placing our weights and burdens on a line and casting them out to God. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God’s grace is sufficient for us if we cast our worries and cares on Him.
Guess what I do? Just like fishing, I often cast my cares and then reel them right back in. Instead of relying on Him, I want to be self-reliant.
The Contemporary English version of Psalm 55:22 reads, “Our Lord, we belong to you. We tell You what worries us and You won’t let us fall.”
So pray. Tell God what worries you. Corrie Ten Boom said, “Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be turned into a burden.” Lean on Him, knowing that God is our strength!
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Thank you for being my faithful burden-bearer. Help me to trust in the sufficiency of your grace. Amen
