6th-8th Grade Confirmation students:
During the academic year, we meet on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of each month, 6:45-8:45pm. (High School Youth Group meets the alternating Wednesdays.)
Wednesday lessons are a TEAM EFFORT between students, parents, and St. Thomas Lutheran Church staff. Relationship building is a priority. The curriculum used is from Augsburg Fortress and Spark House Digital while incorporating creative elements for hands-on, creative learning.
Our time together is spent in the following way:
- Greeting and ice breaker
- Introduction of theme
- Lesson/ activity/ movement/ service project- all incorporated for optimal learning and relationship-building
- Student-lead prayer
- Refreshments
- Dismissal
Parents are a necessary component to this type of programming. Parents are essential as volunteers for serving on Wednesdays. Options for serving include providing refreshments, serving refreshments, helping in the planning of different aspects of the time together. Are you creative? Do you enjoy fun? Let me (Kelley Miller) know! I welcome your input on making our lessons interactive and fun.
Positives for this plan for youth ministry programming are:
- Wednesday night is still “church night", even for families that are unable to prioritize due to athletics or other activities, so we will remain with Wednesday as church night.
- The alternating week schedule allows for busy students and families to alternate between activities on a Wednesday night.
- A weeks) Confirmation and B weeks) athletics/ homework/ family dinner/ etc.
- B weeks) High School Youth Group and A weeks) athletics/ homework/ family dinner/ etc.
- Christian relationship-building will happen as well as learning to follow Jesus through action.
- Time for learning the fundamentals of their Lutheran faith in ways that are enriching and engaging.
- Doing hands-on service projects as part of the lessons.
- Engagement and relationships lead to belonging and when you know you belong, you want to stay.
- An opportunity for parents to provide input and hands-on experiences for their students.
Additional requirements for our students: Acolyting and Communion Assistants: Students will serve as acolytes and communion assistants on a rotating basis at Sunday worship services. To acolyte means to carry the Light of Christ into our worship space at the beginning of worship and out into the world at the conclusion of worship. Students will assist with communion and help with other duties as assigned by a pastor. Training is provided. The best way to learn the acolyting procedure is to consistently attend worship and watch and learn.
